In Pennsylvania the opioid crisis is becoming increasingly damaging, with thousands of deaths by overdose in the past five years in Allegheny County alone. With each death, there are family members, friends, and significant others who must not only face the loss of their loved one, but also come to terms with the way in which their loved one died.

Love, Loss, and Addiction is an art exhibition featuring large scale photorealistic oil paintings that depict that experience, and illustrate understanding and support for those who have lost someone to opioid addiction.

Sarah Jewels-Plesset is a photorealist painter who lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and moved to Pittsburgh 2015. Photorealism gives Jewels a strong sense of control in her story telling. She invites the audience into specific scenes from her memory, while still abstracting the view and allowing room for individual interpretation. Her work aims to capture the moment between expressions, not just for the viewer but for herself as the creator; accessing those fleeting moments connects her more to her own experiences.

She received her BA in Visual Arts from Chatham University in April, 2020. Sarah also attended Carnegie Mellon University’s Pre-College Program, studied with acclaimed artist Lee Price, and has led art lessons with inmates at Allegheny County Jail. She is currently studying to become a Registered Nurse at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing.
