Latino/a/x/e: Language and Gender in Latin America and U.S. Latine Communities

Thursday, March 16, 2023
10:00 AM – 11:15 AM
Woodland 103

Lecture and workshop by Women's Institute Visiting Scholar, Dr. David Blackmore. Co-sponsored by the Latine Student Association (LSA); Chatham Feminist Coalition (CFC); Queer Student Association (QSA). In this interactive workshop, we will connect current debates around language and gender in United States English (stating your pronouns, singular they, honorifics like Ms. and Mx., etc.) to related debates that are taking place in Latin America, where highly gendered languages like Spanish and Portuguese make it even more challenging (and even more interesting!) to work toward more gender-inclusive language. At the intersection of these debates (and at the heart of our conversation here at Chatham) are communities of people of Latin American origin living here in the U.S. These communities often speak two or more languages, and questions about gender inclusivity are central to ongoing debates about how these very diverse communities should name their shared identity: Hispanic? Latino? Latina/o? Latinx? Latine?

This will be a student-centered conversation, but faculty, staff, and the outside community will be most welcome to participate. Join us!
