Paving the Path toward Sexual and Reproductive Health Equity
In this talk, Dr. Borrero will delve into the historical context of reproductive abuses in the U.S., such as forced sterilizations and the exploitation of marginalized communities. By confronting these past injustices, she will illuminate the root causes of persistent disparities in sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Borrero will then present a new public health vision for the country—one that centers reproductive autonomy while addressing the social and structural factors that influence it. The talk will conclude with practical steps to build a more equitable, just, and inclusive future for sexual and reproductive health.
Dr. Borrero is the Founding Director of the Center for Innovative Research on Gender Health Equity (CONVERGE) and a tenured Professor of Medicine; Clinical and Translational Science; and Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is also the co-director of the Advanced Fellowship in Women’s Health at the VA Pittsburgh Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP).
Dr. Borrero is a physician-researcher whose work focuses on contraception and abortion care access, equity, and quality. Her research uses multiple methods and disciplinary approaches to understand the multilevel factors that influence reproductive health equity. In 2022-2023 Dr. Borrero served as a Chief Medical and Scientific Advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Biden Administration. She also has worked closely with other governmental, scientific, and community organizations and agencies to help advance reproductive health services and policies to support all people’s reproductive autonomy and their ability to build the families they desire.
