Seagull
A World Premiere, based on the play by Anton Chekhov
Adapted and Directed by Joanie Schultz
“Something different… something dreamlike. Something true.”
Chekhov’s tragi-comedy, with its pantheon of longing lovers, experienced on the Chatham University campus on the banks of a pond straight out of Tolstoy’s Russian dachas (and under the glittering windows of the Mellon Center façade), Seagull is a story of spiraling unrequited love. At its center is aspiring female playwright Constantine, who falls for the beautiful Nina. Can she escape the circus of her mother, the famous, now-fading actress, Arkadina, and give the world a clarion new artistic voice?
Adapted and directed by Joanie Schultz, Quantum looks at Seagull through our evolving romantic lens and brings new resonance to the timeless themes of desire and identity. Schultz’s emotional interpretation about the nature of art, love, and the unique bond between a mother and a daughter follows an impressive string of credits reenvisioning classic plays to discover their contemporary references. Her adaptation of Chekhov’s Seagull, about a great actress in decline and an emerging younger generation, reveals truths below the surface about marginalized figures and gives contemporary new energy to this masterwork about love and longing, the dreams we chase and the way those dreams reveal who we are.
